Why use Six Sigma?

What is Six Sigma?
Sigma is a Greek letter used to represent the distribution or spread about the mean (average) of any process or procedure. 6a is used as a phrase to denote two different but related issues:
- Six Sigma is a measurement. It provides a measurement that applies to all processes.
- Six Sigma is a management philosophy that focuses on the improvement of processes by keeping a process on target and reducing its variation.
Tip: It is important to note that Sigma as a measurement tool does not give you strong insight into the process. Sigma should not be used as an analytical tool in your processes. Please refer to the Process Capability section for a strong analytical tool concerning variation.
Six Sigma is a management philosophy
A number of factors have come together that has caused companies to decide that World Class Quality was the next great challenge and opportunity for us:
- Our customers are demanding better quality as they are trying to provide better quality for their customers.
- In the attitude survey, employees of GB Capital Services felt we could make further improvement.
- A growing number of companies (Motorola, Texas Instruments and Allied-Signal to name a few) have achieved dramatically better quality levels through a disciplined, rigorous approach that has yielded better customer satisfaction and total cost productivity.
- After several years of tremendous progress, improvement in many of our initiatives slowed due to defects in our processes.
World Class companies have demonstrated to us that we can do a lot better if we take a rigorous approach to quality improvement. World Class Quality is the next great opportunity for companies, and we will be focused on Six Sigma for the next generation of our careers.
Six Sigma is a statistical tool
Six Sigma is a statistical unit that measures process capability. There is an order of magnitude change between sigma levels. 6 Sigma is 20,000 times better than 3 sigma.
For example, and according to the following table 99.9% or 4.6 Sigma quality means that the company will create one billing error every 3 hours. What do our customers want and expect?
